Purple Sensation Allium Bulbs add late-spring structure with round violet-purple flower heads held above the garden on clean stems. Allium aflatunense 'Purple Sensation' grows about 24 to 36 inches tall, with 4- to 5-inch globes made from many small star-shaped florets. The flowers arrive after many tulips, giving spring beds a strong second act before summer perennials take over. Our garden designers like it planted in small clusters because the repeated spheres make a border feel more finished without needing many bulbs.

This perennial flowering onion is one of the most popular large alliums because it is affordable, dependable, and easy to blend into mixed beds. Bees, butterflies, and other pollinators visit the flowers, while deer and rabbits usually leave the plant alone. The strappy leaves often yellow before bloom, which is normal for large alliums and easy to hide with emerging perennials. Use Purple Sensation Allium Bulbs in sunny borders, cutting gardens, cottage plantings, or massed drifts where the flower heads can rise above lower foliage.

Purple Sensation Allium Bulbs Care

Plant Purple Sensation Allium Bulbs in full sun to partial shade, with full sun encouraging the strongest stems and best flower size. Use loose, well-drained soil such as sandy loam, amended garden soil, or raised beds where clay drains slowly. A neutral to slightly acidic soil pH, about 6.0 to 7.0, works well, though drainage is the most important factor.

Water thoroughly after fall planting so soil settles and root growth begins before winter. In spring, water during dry stretches while stems are growing, but let the planting area dry more during summer dormancy. Feed at planting with a bulb fertilizer top-dressed over the soil, and add a light spring feeding as shoots emerge only if soil is lean or the planting is expected to perennialize.

Cut flowers for fresh arrangements when the globe is partly open, or leave them standing to dry in the garden. Remove spent seed heads if you do not want seedlings, but keep the foliage until it has yellowed and dried naturally. Divide or move bulbs during dormancy if clumps become crowded or flowering declines.

Purple Sensation Allium Bulbs Spacing

Plant Purple Sensation Allium Bulbs 4 to 6 inches deep and 4 to 6 inches apart, with the pointed end facing up. For a stronger garden display, plant in groups of 5 to 9 bulbs rather than scattering single bulbs far apart. Containers should be at least 12 to 14 inches wide with drainage holes, and they need winter protection in freeze-thaw climates because bulbs in pots are more exposed than bulbs in garden soil.

For container companions, use pansies or dianthus at the surface so the pot has spring color before the allium stems rise. In landscape beds, irises make excellent partners because their upright leaves hide fading allium foliage while echoing the vertical habit. Avens and blanket flowers suit the same sunny, well-drained conditions and keep the bed colorful after the allium globes fade.
