Growing Zones
White Double Begonia Bulbs brighten shaded containers with large, rose-like white blooms from summer into fall. Begonia semperflorens grows about 8 to 14 inches tall, forming a compact plant with layered flowers that can reach up to 4 inches across. The clean white color is especially useful in low-light gardens because it stands out where darker blooms disappear. Our container designers often use it in covered porch planters, where the flowers can be seen up close and the plant is protected from harsh afternoon sun.
This tuberous begonia is grown for cool-looking flowers in warm weather. It thrives in partial shade to full shade and is an excellent choice for containers, hanging baskets, shaded borders, and small-space patio displays. The blooms can attract hummingbirds and butterflies, while the plant is usually avoided by deer. In zones 8 to 10 it may overwinter outdoors in mild conditions, but colder-zone gardeners should lift and store the tubers after dormancy begins.
White Double Begonia Bulbs Care
Plant White Double Begonia Bulbs in partial shade to full shade, with bright indirect light preferred over direct hot sun. Use rich, well-drained soil or a high-quality potting mix that holds light moisture without staying soggy. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH, about 5.5 to 6.8, supports healthy root and flower growth.
Start tubers indoors in late winter or early spring for earlier blooms, placing the concave side up just below the soil surface. Water lightly until shoots appear, then keep the soil evenly moist while allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Feed monthly during active growth with a balanced water-soluble fertilizer. Avoid wetting the foliage late in the day, since damp leaves in shade can invite fungal problems.
Remove faded flowers and any yellowing leaves to keep the plant clean through the blooming season. Pinch back leggy stems if needed to encourage a fuller shape. In colder zones, reduce watering in fall, let the tops die back, then store cured tubers in dry peat moss, vermiculite, or sawdust in a cool frost-free place.
White Double Begonia Bulbs Spacing
Plant White Double Begonia Bulbs 1 to 2 inches deep and space them 9 to 12 inches apart in shaded beds or mixed planters. For containers, use at least a 10- to 12-inch pot for one tuber, or a wider bowl for a fuller grouping. Make sure the container has drainage holes, because begonia tubers are much more tolerant of slight dryness than trapped water.
For container companions, pair White Double Begonia Bulbs with fuchsia, wishbone flowers, or lobelia for a shaded planter with layered bloom height and trailing edges. Coleus is a useful foliage partner for color contrast. In garden beds, hostas and ferns suit the same shaded setting and create a leafy backdrop that lets the white begonia flowers show clearly.
